Marlow Park won the toss, batted first, lost an early wicket, the crowd then sitting down to an afternoon of runs, initially flowing from the bat of Ikky Ikram who walloped three sixes and three fours while making forty-two of his partnership of 62 with Vaughan van de Linde.

Shez Mirza was also in attacking form with six fours and a six in his thirty-seven, van de Linde departing with the score on 150 for seventy runs having struck eleven fours and a six.

Derek Goosen hit four fours in his twenty-one, then with the dismissal of Simon Atkinson, nine wickets were down for 210. Dave Noray had decided to avoid batting as he was opening the next day against what were thought to be strong opponents, hence had requested the eleventh spot.

Thanks to the kind consideration of nine previous batsmen sacrificing their wickets so that he could have a bit of practice, he walked to the middle to join Donovan Pullin who was having great fun slapping the ball far into the deep before falling on twenty-five. With Noray not out with 14, Marlow Park ended on 243, Binfield’s junior county bowler, Zoe Docherty, having the best figures of 3-34.

Park’s bowlers took until the twentieth over before they took a wicket, but two run outs had been achieved. Shez Mirza broke the bowlers’ duck by taking two wickets in his second over as four middle order batsmen made just fourteen between them.

Opener Suresh Withane was still in and after the drinks break immediately struck Mirza for two fours, then having reached seventy-six, seemed to fall asleep. In the next eleven overs, despite hitting a six, he only made it to 91 when Mirza trapped him LBW.

An exhibition on the techniques of catching was demonstrated by Derek Goosen. He was fielding on the long-on boundary when the ball was lofted very high into the air. He looked around and determined exactly where the boundary was, then positioned himself perfectly under the trajectory of the ball. There was a hushed silence as the projectile fell from the sky towards his cupped hands….. the batsmen crossed for a single.

There was a glorious first this day when Dave Ambrose was given the ball with the last pair in and with his fourth delivery he had Wade caught by Pullin, thereby giving him his first –ever wicket for his Club.

Well if that isn’t worth a jug what else is!

Marlow Park had won by fifty runs.
