MARLOW PARK v. BRAYWOOD

Played at Higginson Park, Marlow

On Sunday 30th May 2021 40 overs a side

In the early 1990s, in the Dark Ages before the invention of emails, Apps and Social Media, the Club communicated with its members by way of a monthly newsletter known as the ‘Middle Order Collapse’. It is almost reassuring to realise that despite modern techniques, the same catastrophe still exists.

Braywood won the toss, batted first and were ably assisted by Park’s quicker bowlers who delivered nineteen wides and more wild deliveries down the leg side, which made up thirteen byes between them giving temporary keeper Sam Coote a negligible chance of preventing them. In all, Braywood ‘scored’ 40 Extras, their second-highest score.

The anchor of their innings was Kamran Ahmed who plodded his way through his first two and a half hours at the crease until he let fly for a few overs after which he retired with exhaustion on 105. Despite fifteen of their 40 overs being bowled by spinners, Park’s bowling rate was fractionally more than thirteen overs an hour.

Pete Stephens took 3-25 as Braywood reached 238 in their allotted overs even though five men in their middle order failed to reach double figures.

To the home players, a win looked like a stroll in the Park as Vaughan van de Linde and Ikky Ikram cruised past the hundred mark, both batsmen achieving half-centuries. Then trouble struck in the form of spinners Adnan Bukhari (5-39), who removed both openers and Adnaan Faisal who helped him scalp the middle order, five members of which scored twenty-three runs between them.

In exactly one hour Park went from 107-0 to 175 all out to lose by 63 runs – they had only had six Extras to help them. Vaughan van de Linde had hit a mighty six towards the end of his innings and a day later the ball was discovered in my garden. We are now claiming that Braywood’s victory was invalid as they continued with the wrong ball!
